PUB LIFEA PORTRAIT SERIES OF SELECTED PUBLICANS IN GERMANY

Pub-Life dips beneath the surface of Irish Pub culture and provides an explicit look into the faces of some of the most influential Irish publicans in Germany. We firmly believe that the success of an Irish Pub stands and falls with the people behind the bar, the people who own it or manage it as if it was their own. The term “publican” is thus not limited to the mere owner, but rather refers to the person who is the face/heart and soul of the pub. A person that has dedicated his or her life to warm jeweled light, dark polished wood and the low hum of conversation: Pub-Life. There are roughly 800 Irish Pubs in Germany. With the intention to provide a holistic overview about Irish publicans in Germany we joined forces with the Irish Embassy in Berlin and the Irish Pub Association Germany.
We travelled 6.387 km, visited more than 80 Irish Pubs in 50 different cities, shot 76 portraits and 4782 additional photographs. We have met individuals from all corners of the world and from all walks of life. In a previous, half-forgotten life they were carpenters, musicians, bankers, jockeys, bookkeepers or bartenders. However, the common thread is a love for Irish culture, a fine pint and the courage to follow one’s dream. The “Pub-Life” portrait series would not have been possible without the help of some very dedicated contributors who – luckily for us – appreciate Irish Pub culture in Germany the same way as we do. Please keep in mind, there are no strangers in this book, just friends you have not met. Text by Timo Kavermann. (Germany, 2019)
